Respirator fit testing is done using a validated method to check that a tight-fitting facepiece matches the worker’s facial features and provides a proper seal. Additionally, it serves in identifying facepieces that are unsuitable for the worker and should not be worn. Every worker has a different face (shape and size); and one facepiece will not fit all workers. Respirator fit testing allows for selection of a respirator that fits the individual and is capable of providing the assigned protection of that respirator.  There are two types of fit testing methods: qualitative (QLFT) and quantitative (QNFT).  Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) is generally NOT SUITABLE for fit testing full-face respirators.

All those who pass the C2F scheme become competent fit testers and are added to the NZOHS RPE Fit Test Provider register. Individuals can then be approached directly by workplaces to conduct fit testing for tight fitting respirators.
