Adrian Parris, a Chartered Fellow of BOHS, is a leading figure in occupational hygiene with experience spanning the speciality chemical, steel, and nuclear sectors. For the past 14 years, he has served as Occupational Hygiene and Chemical Safety Manager at Sellafield Ltd, one of the UK’s most complex and high-risk industrial environments. Adrian is also a dedicated leader in the profession: he sits on the BOHS Board of Trustees, co-chairs the Breathe Freely Manufacturing campaign, and supports the development of future hygienists as an examiner for BOHS qualifications. He is the current BOHS President Elect.
In his keynote, "Respirable Crystalline Silica: Engineered Stone the Challenges of Managing Exposures in the UK," Adrian unpacks the global resurgence of accelerated silicosis, particularly in the kitchen worktop industry due to engineered stone. Drawing on the bold regulatory action taken in Australia, he explores how the UK is developing a multi-layered strategy to protect workers, involving government, regulators, and the BOHS. This compelling session will provide timely insights into risk, regulation, and the critical role hygienists play in shaping effective health protections, both now and into the future.

Marty Byrne is a seasoned executive with over 35 years of experience in the maritime, ports, and logistics sectors across Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand. As the former CEO of Port Nelson Ltd and Vice President of the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), Marty has been a driving force in the industry, earning honorary membership in the IAPH. He has also contributed to health and safety leadership as part of the NZ Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum. Currently, Marty serves as Chief Executive of Christchurch Attractions, overseeing iconic tourism ventures.
In his keynote, "Protected Disclosure – The Price of Integrity," Marty shares a powerful personal story from 2021, when a business review of a Nelson-based marine engineering company led to life-changing events. This gripping talk explores the challenges and personal costs of upholding one’s values in the face of adversity. Marty’s journey is a testament to the importance of integrity, resilience, and standing firm for what is right.
